The multi-million pound scheme to overhaul the Centenary Way viaduct through the centre of Burnley could start by Christmas.

County hall chiefs say the 50-year-old concrete structure is in poor condition and requires major maintenance work.

County Coun. Marcus Johnstone, speaking at Padiham Town Council, said: “There are going to be major works on Centenary Way.

“It is 50 years old and it needs work doing underneath which is going to cost around £3m. It will lead to big disruptions. It is going to happen in the third and fourth quarter of the 2014-2015 financial year.

“It is going to be over Christmas time.

“I am hoping as many people can realise what will be happening as possible and make arrangements because diversions will be in place.”

Vehicles with abnormal loads are currently banned from the seven-span bridge which carries the A682 through the town.

The Transport for Lancashire commissioning report identified Centenary Way as a critical part of Burnley’s road network.

The scheme will rectify numerous defects that have been identified in the structure and allow it to reopen to all traffic.

Work will include replacing the bearings on which the bridge sits, making repairs to some of the concrete, and resurfacing it.

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said a decision had yet to be made on exactly when the ground work would begin but construction is expected to commence by the start of the 2015-2016 financial year.
