£32m. women and newborn centre officially opens in Burnley

A FLAGSHIP £32m. health facility in Burnley which cares for women and their babies has been officially opened.

The Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre, which has been heralded as a world class centre of excellence for maternity and gynaecological services, first opened its doors in November 2010.

This week the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, Lord Shuttleworth, was the guest of honour at a special opening ceremony.

Lord Shuttleworth was joined by hospital bosses and staff at the unit and was taken on a tour of the building before unveiling the plaque.

Also in attendance were the Mayor and Mayoress of Burnley, Coun. David and Mrs Joan Heginbotham, MP Gordon Birtwistle, the first baby to be born at the unit, and the last baby to be born at the Royal Blackburn Hospital before the Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre opened.

The centre provides services for all types of gynaecology care, including fertility treatment and cancer care.
