Primary school parents call for action over drugs

SCHOOL bosses in Burnley have moved to reassure parents their children are safe after four boys aged nine were found with cannabis in a school playground.

The boys, pupils at Cherry Fold Community Primary School, in Cog Lane, have been suspended pending an investigation after they were discovered in possession of the Class B drug just after noon last Friday. Police were called and spoke with the youngsters and their parents. The boys were also given a youth referral order.

Acting headteacher Mrs Deanne Marsh said a very small quantity of the drug in small pieces was discovered.

The school acted immediately and she has written to parents of pupils this week stressing it was “an isolated incident” and the safety of their children was paramount.

But some parents say the boys should not be allowed back into classes.

One mother, who did not want to be named, has a five-year-old son at Cherry Fold and her youngest son attends the nursery school.

“It’s shocking and disgusting. What would happen if one child dropped the drug and another picked it up? It’s just horrible.

People say all sorts about the school because of where it is but I have always stuck up for it.

“I don’t think these boys should be allowed back into school at all.”

Another mum, whose two children attend the school, said the parents of the children involved should be punished.

“What if they gave cannabis to my child? I would go off my head. I think it’s disgusting, how have they got hold of it? They shouldn’t be allowed back and the parents should get done for it from the police.

“It’s a good school and these people are giving it, and the area, a bad name.”

Mrs Marsh said: “I can confirm four pupils are currently not at school while investigations are carried out into an incident at the school.

“It would not be appropriate for me to comment further as we take our pupils’ confidentiality and safety very seriously and are still looking into all the circumstances.”
