And pupils at Christ the King RC Primary School in Burnley loved pretending to be evacuees.
It took them some time to get used to being called by their surnames, standing up when an adult entered the classroom and writing their lessons on a sheet of black paper which acted as a chalkboard.
And they got a real taste of what it must have been like to be an evacuee parted from their families when they had to write a postcard to their parents.
They also enjoyed carrot cake and a tiny slice of Victoria sponge and oat cakes which were part of the staple diet of children in the war years.
The day was rounded off with a trip to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester
