The Burnley bench heard how Gary Bradley (52) pinched a Ralph Lauren jacket worth £99 from TK Maxx and tried to take two football shirts, to the value of £78, from Sports Direct.

The hearing was told Bradley had had long-standing drink and drugs problems and suffered from cirrhosis of the liver, deep vein thrombosis and a hernia.

He was now said to be addressing his issues and even a police officer, who described him as “no angel,” thought he was trying his best.

Bradley, of Westgate, Burnley, admitted theft on September 29th and attempted theft on September 3rd. He was given a six-month community order, with a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement and was fined £20, with £177 compensation and a £150 criminal courts charge.
