Pendle Council's lead member for tackling the crisis, deputy leader Coun. David Whipp, said that it was crucial everyone played their part in getting the virus under control.

Pendle has for some weeks had one of the highest rates of infection across the country, leading to localised restrictions in the borough.

Coun. Whopp urged residents to follow the following four points:

1) Don't Share Air - keep far enough apart from people not to share the air that they are breathing.

2) Keep Hands Clean - and avoid touching things others have touched. Use hand sanitiser frequently and wash hands thoroughly.

3) Cover Face - reduce the risk of passing on the virus if you are unknowingly carrying it.

4) If you think you may have the virus, through having symptoms or having been in contact with someone who has tested positive - please self-isolate for 14 days.

Coun. Whipp said: "The national announcements this morning underline how serious the situation is. We can all play our part in cutting the rate of transmission.

"Many people won't have a personal risk to themselves from the virus, as many people don't suffer any ill effects, but each person that passes the virus on passes it to others who may be more vulnerable. Individuals aren't just taking a risk for themselves, they are risking the health of all those around them and everyone one in our communities.

"It's crucial we all play our part in trying to get the virus under control. We can all do this with these simple steps. Please, please, please do your part and keep our communities and our vulnerable people as safe as they possibly can be."
