MP’s praise for Mindsmatter

Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Mindsmatter service in Burnley has received praise for its work by Norman Lamb MP, Minister for State for Care and Support and Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle after a recent visit.

The Burnley Mindsmatter team, previously known as Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Service, received a visit from the two MPs to look at the developments being made into the quality of care available for people experiencing mental health problems in the area.

The service has recently undergone a re-brand and provides a range of talking therapies for people experiencing common mental health problems such as depression, stress and anxiety.

Mr Lamb said: “It was fantastic to have a look round the Mindsmatter service and see the excellent work for people with mental health problems in the area. I want to build a fairer society and that means better mental health care for everyone. This service is a great example of how the right resources and dedication of everyone involved can give people the high quality support they deserve.”

Mr Birtwistle said mental health had been neglected compared to physical health for far too long. He said: “It was good to see the work being done in Burnley by the Mindsmatter team to improve the provision of support for those experiencing mental health problems in Burnley and Padiham. Many people will at some time or another have to deal with mental health issues either for themselves or a loved one and it is inspiring to see the passion the Burnley Mindsmatter team have for their work.”

Philip Gooden, Mindsmatter service manager, said of the visit: “The comments received during the visit were fantastic and the recognition reflects the hard work that has gone into creating a service which provides quality, compassionate care for the people of Lancashire.”

The Trust is working towards a five-year plan based around the overall vision of providing 21st century healthcare with wellbeing at its heart. As part of this plan, the Mindsmatter team will work in partnership with Clinical Commissioning Groups to produce quality, compassionate care.

One element of the plan is improving outcomes including a reduction in waiting times and in Burnley the team has managed to reduce the wait from 26 weeks to six weeks.

The Mindsmatter service offers a range of services including stress control workshops; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), counselling, mindfulness courses, and also Computer assisted Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (cCBT). For more information visit www.lancashirecare.nhs.uk/mindsmatter.
