Last week’s arson attempt on Grade II Listed Langroyd Hall shocked many, with late night social media updates causing widespread dismay across the town.

It was the latest in a series of setbacks for the historic building, which has lain empty for around two years.

Owners, Leicester based EH Capital 1 Ltd pleaded guilty at Burnley Magistrates’ Court on November 21st for unlawfully removing roof slates and a stone lantern finial in April this year.

It was fined £1,200 and ordered to pay the council’s prosecution costs.

And in December last year we revealed that a plan had been submitted to Pendle Council to convert the hall into a centre housing vulnerable adults. The plan would see part of the hall demolished and four new units built to house 33 "extra care" apartments with cafe, gymnasium, hairdressers, and associated car parking.

Leader Times reported last week that a fire was started behind the building, an offence for which three people have been arrested.

Coun. Sarah Cockburn-Price said: “There was no harm done to this historic Colne building this time, but it could have been so different. We have the fire brigade, the police and council officers to thank for their speedy responses.

"My colleagues and myself have asked Pendle Borough Council whether we can insist the owners provide on-site security until the restoration of Langroyd Hall is complete. We do not want to be ruing the day that action could have been taken to protect this landmark building.”

The local police and fire brigade were quick to attend the scene and thankfully the blaze, which was in an outbuilding to the rear of the hall, was swiftly extinguished.

That night, the police made an arrest, followed by two more arrests two days later. The police’s investigation continues and they have thanked members of the public for remaining vigilant and especially for contacting them when trespassers have been sighted.
