One year left for Ribble Valley's European citizens to apply for 'settlement'

European citizens living and working in Ribble Valley have a year left to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme if they want to remain in the UK.

There have been more than 3.6million applications to the scheme, which allows EU, EEA or Swiss citizens living in the UK to request permission to stay following Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, commonly called Brexit.

If your application to the EU Settlement Scheme is successful, you will be able to continue living and working in the UK after June 30th, 2021.

You will be given settled or pre-settled status, depending on how long you have been a UK resident – settled status if you started living here before December 31st, 2020 and have five years’ continuous residence, or pre-settled status if you started living here by December 31st, but do not have five years’ continuous residence.

If you are given pre-settled status, you will be able to apply for settled status as soon as you have five years’ continuous residence.

Once you have settled or pre-settled status, you can work in the UK, use the NHS for free, enrol in education or continue studying, access public funds – such as benefits and pensions, if you are eligible – and travel in and out of the country.
