The council has been shortlisted in the “Driving Growth” category of the prestigious Local Government Chronicle Awards.

Judges were impressed with the way the borough refused to accept the trends of economic decline which were seen in the 1980s and 1990s.

The council’s long-term “five point plan” for growth has led to widely-recognised work through the Burnley Bondholder network, and the development of new employment sites such as

Burnley Bridge, Shuttleworth Mead and Innovation Drive.

Council leader Mark Townsend said: “It’s good to see Burnley recognised once again at national level for the determined efforts we are making to secure jobs and long-term prosperity for our borough.

“This announcement is a tribute to hard work that’s been done over many years, under different administrations.

“It also underlines the confidence that local businesses have in the area, and will further boost our ongoing work to support existing companies and attract new employers here.”

The judges drawing up the shortlist considered Burnley’s partnership work with the Local Economic Parntership and the emerging Combined Authority for Lancashire, and looked at the details in the council’s “five point plan”.

The main points are: Developing an entrepreneurial culture; supporting and promoting advanced manufacturing; creating a modern image and a first class business environment; securing a highly skilled workforce to underpin the knowledge economy and improving connectivity to key growth centres, through transport links and investment in digital infrastructure.

The winners of the LGC Awards will be announced at a ceremony on March 8th at Grosvenor House, London.
