Policewoman in hospital after Burnley dog attack

A Burnley police officer was attacked by a dog which left one of its teeth embedded in her hand.

The policewoman was repeatedly bitten by the animal after she responded to a call about a disturbance at a house in Rylands Street on Monday night.

The female PC and another officer were confronted by the dog, believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog, and two people at the scene at around 9-30pm.

Police said the animal launched at the officer’s face and she was repeatedly bitten on the hands as she tried to protect herself. She was left with several puncture wounds and a tooth lodged in her hand.

The policewoman was taken to hospital but was transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

Doctors had to perform surgery on her to remove a dog’s tooth and her fingers were due to be check for ligament damage.

Sandra Wardle (58) of Burnley Road, Brierfield, was charged with being drunk and disorderly, failing to comply with a dog control order and allowing a dog out of control to cause injury. She is due to appear at Burnley Magistrates’ Court on May 16th. The dog was seized at the scene.
