Drivers in Pendle are being asked to be considerate around horses on the road.

The plea comes after a recent incident on a country path where a vehicle almost hit a police horse rider.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "We are appealing to all owners of motor vehicles to please drive carefully and slowly when passing any horse and rider on our roads and country lanes. Horses can be unpredictable and may sometimes move sideways or in an unexpected manner as you approach them. Please ensure that you leave plenty of room when passing, and if there are oncoming vehicles then slow right down and allow the vehicle with priority to pass first.

"There has been a reported incident recently by one of our police volunteers who was narrowly missed by an inconsiderate driver. Police volunteers are your eyes and ears in our rural areas and a very valuable police resource which we want to maintain and protect."
