Police storm Nelson home and discover cannabis farm after tip-off

POLICE stormed a house in Nelson on Monday afternoon after receiving a tip-off from the public that drugs were being cultivated at the address.

They discovered 40 cannabis plants growing in the attic of the property in Fountain Street.

The plants were still a couple of weeks off maturity, but when fully grown would be expected to fetch £400 each.

Sgt. Shaun Pearson, who led the raid, said: “It is a good result which has only been brought about thanks to intelligence from the public.”

Officers found equipment in the attic of the property, including four lamps used to cultivate the plants, fans and filtering tunnels.

Sgt Pearson said: “A set-up like we found here is extremely dangerous, as all the wiring used to heat the room is connected to one mains socket. The fire service are called to a number of incidents which have been started by people trying to grow cannabis.”

A man was arrested close to the property after the raid and charged with production of cannabis with intent to supply.
