Police start summer campaign to keep bikers safe

On Sunday, officers took to the county’s roads to offer safety advice to riders and to hand out leaflets.

Insp. Martin Bishop said: “With the sunny weather at the weekend, we found a large number of riders taking to the roads to mark the start of the biking season.

“We want to work with motorcyclists to keep them safe on the roads. This was an ideal opportunity for us to engage with riders who are a vulnerable road user group and share our information about accident causations and safety messages.

“During 2010 there were 46 fatalities on Lancashire’s roads and nine of these involved motorcycles. We are working hard to address this and urge motorcyclists to follow our safety advice.”

Among the sites visited by officers were Rivington Barn and Tarleton.

The activity comes as part of Operation Pathway, a force-wide campaign that sees high profile action days on the county’s roads aimed at saving lives and protecting people.

Similar action days will run throughout the biking season.
