Police launch Operation Fireblade to halt biker Bank holiday deaths

Operation Fireblade will see officers talking to bikers and other motorists at hot-spots across the county as part of the drive to reduce casualties.

Police will also be cracking down on dangerous driving, speeding and the illegal use of mobile phones.

Insp. Mark Baines said Burnley road policing teams would be stepping up activity over the weekend to spread the road safety message. He said: “August Bank Holiday weekend is traditionally one of the busiest times for motorcyclists, which is why we have launched a dedicated operation.

“Many collisions involve other road users who haven’t seen the motorcyclist and I urge other road users to be mindful of the increase in motorbikes on our roads at this time of year. Please be aware of their vulnerability and take extra time to look out for them.

“Bikers need to make sure they are wearing the correct protective equipment when riding, even in the hot weather. Younger riders of motorbikes and mopeds are less likely to wear the full protection and we urge people to consider their safety and protection.

“We are committed to reducing road casualties and will continue to work with motorcyclists and other motorists to help keep people safe on our roads.”
