The incident happened on Friday at around 5-45pm in Olympia Street, at its junction with Mitella Street.

The boy entered the road and was struck by a pickup or flatbed-style vehicle, which is described as being red and silver in colour.

The victim was initially taken to hospital in Blackburn but was later transferred to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, suffering a fracture, a cut to his head and bruising to his hand and lower back.

PC Simon Hodgkinson, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “The victim was playing outside when he was involved in the collision with the truck, which left him with some nasty injuries.

“We are now trying to piece together what happened and would urge the driver of the vehicle, or anyone else who has information about the collision, to get in touch with us.”
