Police appeal: Woman (69) mugged in Nelson

Police are appealing for the public’s help to trace a mugger who targeted a 69-year-old woman in Nelson.

The attack happened around 7-30pm to 8pm on Friday as the victim was walking along Leeds Road, near the Prince of Wales pub. She was approached from behind and pushed to the floor with the offender snatching her handbag and running off across Leeds Road, towards the river and the former Tesco building.

The woman has been left very shaken by her ordeal and sustained bruising to her face and knee, as well as an injury to her hand.

The offender is described as an Asian or mixed race male, of slim build, who was wearing a black hooded top.

A police spokesman said they were investigating the possibility this robbery may be linked to another crime which occurred at 11-30am on Monday, November 17th, at Nelson Bus Station when a thief wrestled a purse from the grip of an 85-year-old woman.

Detective Consatble Alisa Wilson said: “I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have information about the robbery, to make contact with detectives.

“I am trying to trace a couple who may have witnessed the incident, together with a lady who helped the victim. I would urge them to come forward and help the team of detectives working on this case find the man responsible for this robbery.

“This incident must have been very frightening for the victim and she is currently receiving support from officers and her family.”
