Photos: Samba feel at Fence Festival

A samba atmosphere descended on the village as scores of people joined in a carnival through the streets inspired by the soccer tournament in Brazil.

The colourful parade was led by Pendle Jazzmen and included floats from three Fence churches, scout and guide groups and businesses.

Fence United organised the fete which came to life in the school grounds with lots of attractions for children and families.

Youngsters enjoyed bouncy castles and slides, a fun dog show, face painting, football skills and circus skills.

Crowds enjoyed Fence’s Got Talent show and there were stalls selling food, refreshments and goods to raise money for local causes including Children’s Play Ground Fund.

The festivities started on Thursday with the opening of the Pendle Forest Sports Club’s three-day beer festival which saw drinkers enjoy a selection of 20 real ales.

There was a hog roast and live music at the popular event which help raised money for local charities.

On Sunday it was the turn of the three Fence churches with a joint service in the morning at Wheatley Lane Methodist Church and a ‘Songs of Praise’ in the afternoon followed by a strawberry afternoon tea at the Village

Robin Yerkiss, of Fence United, said: “The theme of the parade was the World Cup so, apart from the very grey weather, there was a Brazilian atmosphere as it moved through the village, Chicks on Sticks and Bertie Bee were also on hand to entertain the crowds of people.

“The whole event was judged an outstanding success with Fence United achieving its goal of bringing villagers together with an exciting programme and the various village institutions raising money for their own projects.”
