Photographs wanted to create Nelson Monopoly board

Nelson will be transformed when unusual and colourful vehicles come to the town centre to celebrate the re-opening of its high street.

And local artist Roger Hesketh needs your help to create his own unusual “art car” so he can take part in the Nelson Art Car Parade on Saturday, August 20th.

Hanna Latty, Town Centres Officer, said: “Roger has come up with a fantastic idea of creating a giant Monopoly inspired board which will be transported on a tricycle.

“Monopoly is one of the nation’s favourite board games and this is a really great way to celebrate your favourite parts of town!”

Roger, who lives in Brierfield, added: “To make this something we can all be proud of. I’d really like as many people as possible to send me interesting photos of Nelson.

“It could be a close up of a well-known landmark or a picture of a particular place or building you like.

“Your picture could make it onto my giant interactive Monopoly board which will be the focal point of my ‘art car’.”

Roger was in Nelson town centre on Friday encouraging people to help him create Nelson’s own Monopoly board. He had 2ft versions of the original playing pieces with him.

He said: “Once the board has been completed, it will be about 2m square. “Come and see me in the pit stop area before and after the parades and challenge your friends and family to a game!”

Nelson Art Car Parade will celebrate the completion of Nelson High Street on August 20th between 10-30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

As well as Walk the Plank’s famous Art Car Parade there’ll also be a town crier, street theatre, music performances, poetry and local exhibitions.

And the Shuttle - the sculptural reminder of Nelson’s weaving heritage erected last week - will be officially unveiled.

Brian Cookson, Director (Regeneration), who has overseen work, said: “This is the latest in a number of really positive developments for the town – a huge investment which has provided a high quality environment, of which Nelson can be proud for years to come.”

Once the multi-million pound scheme is complete, Nelson town centre will have a new layout with a road running through it, something the council and traders have wanted for years. It will also be pedestrian-friendly – the overall effect will be a tree-lined boulevard, with seating areas in the central space.

Coun. Mike Blomeley, who oversees Pendle’s economic development, said: “Creating a giant Nelson-inspired Monopoly board is a fun way to get involved in the town centre opening event.

“It’s another way to bring the town to life and get everyone behind it, talking it up.

“We know there are many budding photographers in Nelson, so get your favourite images of the town to Roger!”
