Tributes to respected Padiham community campaigner and former mayor

Former Mayor of Padiham and Burnley Labour councillor Jean Cunningham has died.

Mrs Cunningham was well known and respected throughout Padiham and the wider area for her tireless work in the community.

Former Burnley Labour MP Julie Cooper said: "So very sad to hear about the passing of Jean Cunningham. Jean was one of the best. She would do anything for anyone and she cared passionately about Padiham.

"She was a dedicated councillor and a loyal friend to both Brian and myself. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this very sad time."

Another former Burnley Labour MP, Peter Pike, paid tribute to her saying: "Sorry to hear of the sad death of Jean Cunningham, former Padiham councillor and Mayor of Padiham.

"Jean was always a great campaigner and fighter for Padiham and the disabled. Despite health problems over the last year her voice has still been loud and clear fighting for those in need.

"Sympathy and condolences to all her family - rest in peace Jean."

Mrs Cunningham represented Hapton with Park from May 2010 to May 2018 when she lost her seat to Tom Commis by 53 votes.

Burnley Council's chief executive Mick Cartledge said: "We're very sorry to hear this sad news. Jean was a hard-working councillor who served our borough well, particularly Padiham which was a community close to her heart. Our thoughts and condolences go to her family and friends."
