Every child, no matter what their circumstances, should wake up on Christmas day with something special to open and a smile on their face.

With this in mind, an urgent plea is being issued for brand new toys and gifts to help families and children across the Ribble Valley who might otherwise go without this festive season.

As reported last week, The Clitheroe Advertiser and Times and the Ribble Valley branch of the Salvation Army have once again teamed up to launch their annual toy appeal to help families and children who might otherwise go without this Christmas.

For the 17th year running, the generosity of Valley residents is once again being called upon to help families less fortunate than themselves. However, this year more than ever, your toy donations matter.

The financial impact of COVID-19 has caused an unprecedented challenge for thousands of the most vulnerable low income families and individuals. Thousands of people have lost their jobs due to their workplace closing and have been particularly hard hit just before Christmas.

We are appealing for the donation of new toys and gifts for different age groups from babies to teenagers.

Capt Elizabeth Smith, of the Salvation Army, Clitheroe, said: "In 16 years, our community has never failed to provide the toys for needy families in Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley.

"We are confident that this year the COVID virus will not get in the way of the toy donations coming in. We do not want any struggling families to see disappointment on their children’s faces this Christmas.

"It is heartbreaking not to be able to provide for your children due to circumstances beyond your control. If you are unable to deliver a toy to our building Monday to Friday between 10am and 12-30pm, please ring me on 07709 351 394 to arrange another time."

She explained that a wish list has been added to Amazon where people can order toys which be delivered directly to The Salvation Army. She said: "Look at our wish lists on Amazon and have toys delivered directly to us. There are also local shops in Clitheroe selling toys on a click-and-collect system.

"I am confident, with the communities’ help, we will be able to supply the need again this year.”
