The students were sent home from Unity College yesterday afternoon, the first day for many returning to their desks after a six month absence, after the parent of a year seven child contacted the school to say her son had tested positive for the virus.

The boy and his family have been part of the government's 'track and trace'pilot scheme and are tested weekly.

In a message sent out to all parents at the school in Towneley Holmes headteacher Mrs Sally Cryer said the boy's parents did not have the virus and he had no symptoms at all.

Mrs Cryer said the student was isolated immediately before being collected by his family. The parents of all the other students in his 'bubble,' a total of 25 year sevens, were also sent home immediately.

The rooms where the class had been taught were deep cleaned immediately and the school has assured parents that no other student 'bubbles' in any other year group, including year seven, have been affected.
