Popular town centre watering hole The Flying Dutchman was among the worst hit as the storm swept across Lancashire over the weekend, causing serious flooding in Padiham.

And the doors look set to remain closed until early next week as damage repair is carried out with landlord Anthony Woan estimating losses of around £2,000.

Anthony managed to protect the main pub area from flooding but was helpless to do anything as it hit the cellar 'like a waterfall.'

And electricity was only restored to the Burnley Road hostelry this lunch-time, four days after the storm hit.

He said: "The cellar was completely destroyed so we have had to clear it out completely and start to sanitise the area and replace all the equipment.

"I managed to stop the water from getting into the pub with towels, mops and buckets but it entered the drop hatch of the cellar like a waterfall, there was nothing I could do."

Anthony, who only took over the reins of the pub just over a year ago, said Thwaites brewery and also Burnley Council had been extremely helpful adding: "The council have provided the skip for everyone and the brewery are also helping me to sort out the electrics.

"Everything is by candlelight at the moment, it is just one of those things that we have to deal with."

Several shops in the town centre were hit by flood water as Storm Ciara raged and the River Calder rose to its highest levels since the devastating floods on Boxing Day, 2015.
