The sad discovery was made in the park, which is an extension of Thompson Park, in the early hours of yesterday morning, but police are not treating the death as suspicious.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at around 12-20am yesterday (Wednesday) to reports of a concern for welfare. Officers attended Thompson Park in Burnley, where the body of a man aged in his 50s was sadly located.

"At this time there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances and a file has been passed to HM Coroner. Our thoughts are very much with his family and friends at this sad time."
