For the 17th year running, the generosity of Valley residents will once again be called upon to help families less fortunate than themselves. However, this year more than ever, your toy donations matter.

The financial impact of COVID-19 has caused an unprecedented challenge for thousands of the most vulnerable low income families and individuals. Thousands of people have lost their jobs due to their workplace closing and have been particularly hard hit just before Christmas.

We are appealing for the donation of new toys and gifts for different age groups from babies to teenagers.

The premise of the appeal is that presents for any age of child or teenager can be donated, as long as they are new. The items will be distributed to families across the Ribble Valley, with the aim that each child receives a main gift, a craft item or game, a soft toy and a book.

Appeal co-ordinator Captain Elizabeth Smith, of the Clitheroe Salvation Army, explains: "This year we expect the numbers of children in need to increase significantly, due to people suffering financial hardship, loss of jobs etc. We want to do our best to prevent children from low income families having a miserable Christmas, so we will do our very best to meet the extra needs with the help of our generous and caring community.

"This will be our 17th year working with the Clitheore Advertiser and Times. We are grateful for all those years of press space and support. We are also thankful for our big-hearted Ribble Valley community, who have never failed to share what they have, to bring joy to children and relief to parents at this time of year."

She added: "Due to the lockdown, we would appreciate referrals as soon as possible. We do not need childrens' names - we only need ages and genders, with a name and mobile phone number for contacting regarding deliveries. Please state if a child has extra needs.

"For people wishing to donate toys, they can be dropped off at The Salvation Army, 31/31A, Lowergate, Clitheroe (The old Job Centre) Monday to Friday between 10am to 12-30pm. "Please note we only take NEW toys.

"Due to the lockdown causing non-essential shops to be closed, toys may be hard to access, however, I think toy shops in Clitheroe will be providing a click-and-collect service."

She concluded by saying: "Anyone who wishes to donate, but is not able to shop in order to purchase a toy, we would be grateful for donations of money. We will then be able to purchase toys online to meet the need.
