Ribble Valley football club announces death of former chairman

In a statement released by the club a spokesman said: "It is with great sadness that Clitheroe FC has learned of the death of former chairman Steve Rush.

"Steve will be remembered fondly by supporters, not least for his tireless work in his first season in charge when he led the Blues to their only Wembley visit in 1996 for the FA Vase final.

"He was also heavily involved shortly afterwards with negotiations with Crystal Palace for the signature of keeper Carlo Nash, securing the club’s highest ever transfer fee of £45,000.

"His time in charge was very much a family affair and he worked hand in glove with his father-in-law and Clitheroe legend Terry Nelson, to start to turn Shawbridge into the stadium it is today.

"Even after stepping down he kept an eye out for the club and was always on hand with sound advice when sought.

"Steve will be sadly missed and with him goes a key link to the Blues’ moment in the national spotlight."

Mr Rush was also well known to many people thanks to his active involvement with the group Clitheroe Residents' Action Group, known as CRAG.
