Organisers of the event, which last year raised more than £110,000 for Pendleside Hospice and was due to be held on Saturday, August 29th , have taken the decision as it would be impossible to adhere to government guidelines.

They were also conscious of not putting any extra burden on the National Health Service.

A spokesman for the Rotary Club of Burnley Pendleside, who organise the popular event, said: "We have not taken the decision lightly. The Pendle Pub Walk raises a huge amount of money for the hospice and local Rotary charities as well as supporting our local economy.

"We know how disappointing this will be for so many people as around 1,300 people took part last year, but we are sure everyone will understand why this decision has been taken."

It has also been announced that it is intended to hold the walk next year on Saturday, June 19th.
