Nelson father banned from driving abuses and confronts man after being called a paedophile

A banned driver shouted abuse at a passer-by who had called him a "paedophile," a court heard.

Damone Rous Murphy had been driving along in Nelson with his family when the victim shouted towards his car. An angry Murphy got out of his vehicle and confronted him.

Burnley magistrates were told 46-year-old Murphy, of Rhoda Street in Nelson, had been ordered off the road for 24 months. He had not committed any offences for two years.

The defendant admitted driving whilst disqualified on Hallam Road; having no insurance; and using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour last December 15th. He was bailed for a pre-sentence report.

Miss Cathryn Fell, defending, said Murphy was embarrassed his temper got the better of him, saying: "He says the victim was staring at him. He dropped off his partner and child, drove back round and accepts he argued with him."

Miss Fell said Murphy had tried to get a mental health assessment. She went on: "At the time, his marriage was also unstable. He was going through a lot of problems. He shouldn't have had the altercation with the male. He is extremely apologetic about what happened.

"He had a stroke two years ago and doesn't know if it has affected his brain activity. He says he is not that type of person," she added. "He reacted badly. He had not driven a long distance. He has not been in trouble for two years."
