Police say Haroon was a front seat passenger in a BMW 1 Series which hit the roundabout opposite the Hesketh Arms pub before overturning and crashing into the entrance to the cemetery.

Today his family paid tribute and asked for mourners to respect the current coronavirus restrictions surrounding his funeral.

A fund-raising page set up for charity in his name has already raised more than £26,000.

A statement on Facebook announced "with great sadness the death of Haroon Ahmed, age 18, Son of Maaz Ahmed, Cave Street, Fishwick, Preston.

"Haroon was a lovely young lad who was doing Quran Hafiz, also played football for Nelson".

The statement added that in view of the coronavirus social distancing restrictions, there will be no Condolence / Taziyat sitting at this time.

Mourners were requested to offer prayers and recitals from their own homes.

Iram Amin is organizing a GoFundMe page in Haroon's memory.

The fund-raising page states: "Haroon has tragically passed away at the mere age of 18.
