Motorists warned of treacherous weather conditions after multiple accidents

Police have issued a plea to motorists to slow down and take care when out about about this evening.

The plea follows multiple collisions which have taken place across the county due to the adverse weather conditions.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "We are currently dealing with a number of road traffic collisions due to the adverse weather conditions.

"There have been reports of multiple collisions on the M6 between junctions 29 and 31, both north and southbound. A closure has also been put in place on the M61 northbound at junction 9, while there has also been collisions on the M65 between junctions 2 and 3 and on the A56.

"We would ask that people drive appropriately to the weather conditions and avoid the areas if at all possible.​ We will update you as soon as possible."

As reported earlier, The Met Office has issued further warnings for snow and ice which will move in tonight and hit large parts of the county. Icy blasts of rain, sleet and snow are set to fall over the coming hours with forecasters predicting one to three centimetres of snow cover across the north west. A further yellow warning has been put out by the Met Office as the wintry showers are expected to cause travel disruption to roads and railway services."
