Over the years the arts and community venue in Church Street has contributed enormously to the local area and it's used by dozens of people every week.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, St Mary's Centre lost out with little revenue coming in and same (or higher) costs.

So, a fundraising challenge with a target of £1,000 was organised by chair of the trustees of St Mary's Centre, the Rev. Andy Froud, to help keep "Clitheroe's Village Hall" open and develop it for the future.

Keen walking/running enthusiasts - ranging from as little as four to 80 - put their best foot forward and walked or ran up the historic Paradise Lane in a relay from 8 am to 3 pm.

Delighted with the turnout, Mr Froud said: "Thank you to everyone who took part. The participants climbed a total of 7090 metres. The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales and the total ascent is 3064 metres (10,052ft) - twice the ascent of the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

"Generous donors also pushed the amount raised well over the £1,000 target.

"I have been really encouraged by the generous donations that people have already made: some from current users, others who have brought toddlers to our groups in the past.

"The St Mary's Centre is entirely funded by payments from a wide variety of user groups so this event will help us get back on our feet after lockdown. We run on a shoestring - so any shoestrings you can donate are very welcome."

The fundraising appeal is still open and you can help preserve this arts and community venue for future generations. Anyone wishing to donate can do so by clicking here
