Fire and smoke seen across town as Burnley allotments go up in flames

Flames and smoke from an allotment blaze in Burnley could be seen across the town earlier this evening.

Crews from Burnley and Nelson were called out to the blaze in Hollingreave Road at 6pm and they remain at the scene.

A quantity of mixed waste had set alight on a number of allotments which firefighters extinguished using two main jets and one hose reel. Crews took an hour to bring the blaze under control.

At around the same time firefighters from Burnley were joined by crews from Bacup to deal with a grass fire in Worsthorne. Arriving at the scene in Gorple Road they found an area of grassland on a hill alight.

They quickly extinguished the fire using forced air blowers, beaters and aqua packs. Crews were in attendance approximately one hour and thirty minutes.
