Daughter's pride in Burnley dad still working as carer at 69

Lynsey Turner, who works as an auxiliary nurse, contacted the Burnley Express to highlight the brave and selfless work her dad Robert Hitchon has done working as a carer in the community for Spring Cottages care home in Padiham.

Robert, or Bob as he likes to be known, has continued to work long hours helping elderly and vulnerable people during the pandemic, despite suffering from diabetes and angina himself.

Lynsey said: "I'm very proud of dad for everything he continues to do despite his age and own health difficulties. To be honest, I wish he'd retire because I worry about him, but he says he has no intention of stopping yet.

"It has been a worrying time because dad goes into people's homes, but I know it's something he really enjoys. He basically gives the clients personal care such as washing and dressing them, cooking for them or giving them their medication.

"I work as a nurse myself across East Lancashire so I know personally how difficult this pandemic has been for a lot of people but I'm very proud of dad because he doesn't need to be doing it."

Bob, who turns 70 in April, has only worked in the caring profession for about 10 years, after being made redundant from his former job in a local weaving shed.

The father-of-three from Gannow likes to walk his dog Fudge in his spare time and enjoys a drink at Mullard's.

Lynsey added: "Dad lives on his own with his dog so I think this job gives him a lot too. He's very friendly and won't shut up so it's perfect for him. I think it has kept him going. He deserves a lot of recognition in my eyes."
