Fr Alex Frost, whose St Matthew's Church is located in one of the most deprived areas of the country, said he wants to put on a free night of entertainment for families in the South-West Burnley area who are struggling to make ends meet.

The irreverent reverend says he was inspired by the work of Christian minister Pastor Mick Fleming, who has been working to help Burnley's homeless and highlight their plight.

"Pastor Mick Fleming is doing some brilliant work supporting some of the most deprived individuals in Burnley," Fr Alex said. "I am very keen to support Mick in his ministry as in the parish of St Matthew's we also come across some heartbreaking levels of deprivation and want to help as much as possible.

"On Friday June 19th therefore I am planning to host a community comedy night aimed particularly at families, who frankly would benefit from some joy and laughter.

"It is not a fund-raising night as such as I want it to be a free event, but it would hopefully raise awareness of Church on the Streets and Christians Against Poverty, which is a charitable debt relief agency.

"Our comedy evening will be suitable for all the family, which is very rare these days. Even though it is free, it will be ticketed as similar events I've put on in the past always pack the church out."

Fr Alex is now looking for sponsors to help with funding the evening.

He added: "Th event is free, but I need to cover the cost of the lighting and professional comedian and the amount will be £400. It is my intention to invite as many local dignitaries as possible to be alongside this community and hopefully raise awareness."
