The band of volunteers were armed with litter pickers and donned high-visibility jackets to spruce up popular visitor areas including Brungerley Park, Clitheroe Castle grounds, Clitheroe Market and its car park.

They collected 10 big black bags of rubbish in total.

The initiative was organised by Clitheroe Lions' vice president, Ian Lloyd. He explained: "As part of our community service projects , the members and some ladies held a litter pick day in and around Clitheroe.

"It worked out well because we were outside and could easily spread out and socially distance.

"We would like to thank Ribble Valley Borough Council for supplying the litter pickers, gloves and waste bags. We are full of praise for the refuge department who look after our streets and parks as when we first went to Brungerley Park, we had great difficulty in finding any rubbish in all the acres the park has.

"We then concentrated on the castle grounds, market and car parking areas.

"We are very lucky to have a borough council who are very vigilant and clean and look after our area so well. I doubt it would be the same if we came under a different authority. Praise where praise is due."
