The group, set up by scaffolder Kieron Carroll from Lawrence Avenue, ran 250 milles between them in a bid to raise the fantastic amount during their daily one hour permitted exercise.

Keiron said: "I decided to set up the WhatsApp a few weeks ago to keep in contact with some pals during lockdown. We then started doing six minute workouts as a laugh and giving out fines for anyone who couldn't complete them, as a bit of fun.

"I then thought it would be good to take this a step further and raise some money for charity so we agreed to run 250 miles between us for Pendleside Hospice, which is a very worthy local charity.

"Most of us played football together in our youth but we aren't exactly serious fitness fanatics so we called it the 'Old Boys 250 Mile Run Challenge.' We mapped everyone's runs and raised the money and target in just four days."

Kieron, whose wife Jennifer is an NHS nurse, said the group of 13 pals were joined by the daughter of one of their pals, 12-year-old Ava Schofield, in running whatever they could from Monday to Friday last week.

However, such was the effort, the group smashed their target by Thursday, and so on Friday decided to visit the hospice in fancy dress.
