Burnley has been revealed one of the least popular places in the UK to cycle to work.

With just one per cent of the population cycling to work weekly in the town, Burnley is on a level with Cannock Chase in Staffordshire. The figures in Hyndburn were slightly higher with two per cent of residents biking their way to work.

The statistics have been pulled together by money.co.uk to offer some guidance to enable beginnners to cycle to work without a huge expense.

Cycle To Work day 2020 concentrates on the benefits of getting in the saddle to get to work, something that the people of Cambridge have taken to their hearts. The city takes the top spot with over half of its residents (60%) cycling to work between three and five times weekly.

Cambridge was recently the first place in the UK to open a “dutch roundabout” which gives cyclists priority over motor vehicles. Following Cambridge is Oxford (38%) and the Isle of Scilly (29%).

Four out of the top 10 are within London; as insights reveal the residents of Hackney (23%), Southwark (18%), Wandsworth (18%) and Camden (15%) as avid cyclists.

As pop-up cycle lanes have been introduced throughout the capital, amid the coronavirus pandemic, the interest in cycling is only expected to grow.

And the government are offering riders £50 vouchers towards the cost of repairing bikes that may have been gathering dust in sheds and garages.
