Burnley mayor launches medal to honour local volunteers

Coun. Wajid Khan has appealed to the public to nominate those individuals and organisations that deserve honoring for their efforts in supporting the borough, both through the epidemic and in general.

A specially commissioned medal will be awarded by the Mayor monthly throughout his year in office.

“We’re all going through some very difficult and challenging times at the moment,” said Coun. Khan. “There are some people and groups out there that are going above and beyond to help others in all sorts of different ways.

“The idea of a Mayor’s Medal is to give people an opportunity to put forward those individuals and organisations and get some recognition for all the great work they’re doing to help others less fortunate.

“I want to hear from you if you know an individual or a voluntary group that deserves recognition for the voluntary work they do throughout the borough.”

The nomination form is available online at www.burnley.gov.uk/about-council/mayor/mayors-medal-voluntary-service where there is also further information about the award. Hard copies are also available by emailing [email protected]

A panel of three people, including the Mayor, will examine the nominations and decide on who should receive a medal.

The winners will be judged against a number of criteria, including “individuals/volunteers/groups who have taken the initiative to create, lead and drive forward their volunteering work and are doing this in a way that is truly distinctive and excellent”.
