A health support scheme for people with a range of health conditions, Up and Active offers bespoke group and individual activities and will be on offer at venues including St Peter’s and Padiham leisure centres, Prairie Sports Village, and Burnley Mechanics.

“More now than ever, there is a massive need for the services provided by Up and Active," said Dr Mark Dziobon, a Burnley GP and Medical Director for NHS East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group. "These can go some way to improving mental and physical well-being, especially for people who are currently inactive for whatever reason, for those who feel that they need to lose weight, or have other health conditions that would benefit from becoming more active.

“All the activities within the Up and Active programmes are suitable for those who are new to exercise or have experienced reduced activity due to the lockdown, injury or poor mental health," Dr Dziobon. “I hear and know of many people living in Burnley who have benefited from the Up and Active support that is available.

"People like the courses because they feel welcome, they get practical advice and they are well-supported to do what’s needed to become more healthy.”

Phased over three weeks, the Up and Active programme offers three different services: an exercise referral scheme, weight management, and cardiac rehabilitation support. Providing participants with tailored health goals, the courses help people with a range of conditions such as weight problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, back problems or injuries, or mental health issues such as anxiety or depression.
