Towneley Hall and the railway viaduct next to UCLan/Burnley College will be lit up in purple at night to show the local authority's commitment to fighting oppression.

Council leader Coun. Charlie Briggs said: "Burnley Council is committed to supporting the fight against racism, not only in our own borough but across the world.

"This is a small but visible part of a much wider and effective fight to tackle racism whenever and wherever it rears its ugly head. We stand in solidarity with everyone who continues to challenge racism, discrimination and inequality."

Coun. Mark Townsend, leader of the opposition Labour group, said: "I welcome the council's decision to support the call for us to follow the example of other towns and cities and light up our landmarks as a mark of support for the anti-racism movement that has spread around the world since the death of George Floyd in the United States."

Towneley Hall will be lit between 10pm and midnight tonight, tomorrow and Sunday, and the railway arches will follow a similar pattern. Ongoing building work at Burnley Town Hall prevented it from also being lit up.

The colour purple has come to symbolise the struggle against oppression and buildings across Britain have been lit up following the death of Mr Floyd.
