The Mayor, Coun. Anne Kelly, has agreed to donate £1,500 from her charity fund to Burnley and District Talking Newspaper.

Each year the Mayor of Burnley decides which organisations should benefit from fund-raising carried out on their behalf.

Coun. Kelly said: “I chose Burnley and District Talking Newspaper as one of my charities because I know from personal experience how important their work is.

“My mum was blind for the last few years of her life and after being an avid reader all her life really missed knowing what was happening in the town. She looked forward to the recordings of the local news dropping through her letter box every week.

“The Talking Newspapers are a charity and get no funding and I want to see them able to continue, not just now but in the future.”

Usually a group of volunteers meet at Colne Road library to read, record, copy and pack CDs which are then sent out free of charge, with the postage paid for by Royal Mail.

However, the coronavirus crisis means the volunteers cannot meet. Husband and wife team Alan and Marjorie Dunderdale are continuing to record materials at their home so the service continues.

“I’d also like to thank the members of the Consort’s fundraising committee and all those who have supported my charity fund.”
