Blooming brilliant! Housing developer donates £100 to green-fingered volunteers in Whalley
The volunteer led group, who call themselves The Lavender Ladies and Laddies, works throughout the village of Whalley, and their aim is to fill the village with colour and make it a wonderful place to live.
Whalley is a short distance away from Barratt Homes’ development, The Brooks, on Whalley Road in the neighbouring village of Barrow.
Volunteer Rose Dykes said: “Whalley in Bloom celebrates ten years of gardening, projects, and friendships in 2021. Our projects range from gardening at the Whalley Abbey, to growing vegetables at the local primary school.”
“We also organise the installation and removal of 120 hanging baskets for local businesses in winter and summer, along with the beds and planters in the main areas of the village.”
The group has won a number of awards since they were established in 2011, including the Silver Gilt in the 2015 National Britain in Bloom Awards, and the 2017 Gold Medal in the Small Town Category for the North West. In 2018, the group entered into the National Britain in Bloom awards and won gold in the Small Town category.
Rose continued: “There are over twenty volunteers who have all sorts of skills, and new ones are always welcome! We hold two main fundraising events each year; a summer fete, and a winter coffee morning. Unfortunately, we had to cancel this year’s events due to the pandemic and have had to fundraise in other ways, so we are very grateful to Barratt Homes for their donation!”
Robert Holbrook, Managing Director of Barratt Homes North West, said: “As one of the UK’s leading developers, it is really important that we support charities and local organisations in our surrounding area. “Whalley in Bloom is a great example of a small, volunteer led organisation going the extra mile for their community. It is admirable that the group is working hard to provide some colour and happiness during the pandemic, and it is excellent that this organisation is going out of its way to help others during these unprecedented times.”
