Barley to Robin Hood's Bay is the new 'Ellis Way'

Nigel Bate, a neighbour and longtime friend of self-employed electrician Ellis Eastham from Colne, decided to organise the walk to raise money for various good causes following Ellis' death from liver cancer aged just 50 last October.

Both keen walkers, Nigel chose the route, which started with a trek up local lanndmarks Pendle Hill and Weets Hill, because all were close to Ellis' heart.

Accompanying Nigel are his children Lola (15), Otis (13), brother David (52) and Ellis' children Claudia Whiteside (24) and 17-year-old Lucas.

Accountant Nigel (48) said: "Ellis was a friend of over 30 years and a good neighbour. He was very well known throughout the area for his electrical business. At his funeral, friends and family got chatting about doing something in his memory.

"We both enjoyed many walks together so I thought this would be a good idea. Robin Hood's Bay and Pendle Hill were his favourite places, so we decided to do that over several days and call it the 'Ellis Way'."

The group, who are currently staying overnight at a bed and breakfast in Thirsk, have already raised £4,500 which will be split between Macmillan, Pendleside Hospice and money to buy a bench at Barrowford Cemetery bearing Ellis' name.

Nigel added: "The walk has been quite tough but everyone is doing well, especially the youngsters. The weather's been kind as it's not been too hot or wet. Lucas plays football for Padiham FC annd Otis did the Yorkshire Three Peaks when he was just 10 so everyone is pretty fit, but it's still a good challenge.

"The final two days of the walk will be the toughest as the distance will be about 40 miles. Other family members, including Ellis' widow Jackie, are going to drive to Robin Hood's Bay and meet us there where we can have some kind of celebration in Ellis's memory, and a lift home!"
