Although the system is different from the original, Mr Birtwistle said people power had won the day.

Last summer, Mr Birtwistle launched a campaign, Time To Sign, in response to Lancashire County Council’s move to save money by switching off the illuminated departure boards.

Bus users, especially those with poor eyesight, were outraged when they were told that switching off the departure lights would save the county council £47,000 over two years. County council chiefs said the information was available on timetables.

A petition was started and thousands of residents signed it. Mr Birtwistle then sent it to Lancashire County Council

Mr Birtwistle has now been informed a new system giving information about departures had been installed.

He said: “This just demonstrates the power of people. I would say this is definitely a win for the people of Burnley who made their voices heard at County Hall.”
