Peacocks store to move into empty Burnley Woolworths site

Two years since the landmark building closed its doors, Charter Walk bosses have confirmed the discount fashion giant, which has more than 550 stores nationwide, is set to receive the keys to part of the store early next month and it should be open 12 weeks later.

The store sells men’s and women’s fashion clothing, shoes and accessories and was previously rumoured to have been linked with the Curzon Street development.

A bargain chain is also rumoured to be in talks to occupy the other half of the store and, as part of the same development, 22 new parking spaces are to be created in the basement as an extension of the existing Charter Walk car park.

Charter Walk centre manager Mr Chris Gribben said he was “delighted” that a recognised name to fill the unit, which has been vacant since the YMCA charity shop moved out last year, had been found.

“First of all we don’t want a vacant unit,” he said.

“It’s good to see space being occupied. It is a boost for the town centre.

“In what are deemed to be difficult times over the last 12 to 18 months it shows a confidence in the town that a retailer is willing to take space of that size. It’s got to be a positive sign for the town centre as a whole.

“It’s a recognised brand and I think there’s an expectation to see new fascias in town.

“I think they will do a quality fit of that site. I’m sure it will be a success.”

Bargain chain 99p Stores is rumoured to be set to occupy the other half, although a spokeswoman for the company refused to confirm if this was the case. She said a new store in Burnley was “on the cards” but said nothing had been signed.
