Patient care honour for Burnley General Hospital unit

The Rakehead Rehabilitation Centre at Burnley General Hospital has achieved the remarkable feat of going ten years without a single patient developing a pressure ulcer.

The Rakehead Rehabilitation Centre at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust has recently achieved the feat of going ten years without a patient developing a pressure ulcer.

The staff at the centre have put this down to their approach to care which insures that all patients have their individual needs met.

This means that the patients are kept well hydrated, regularly repositioned and all wounds are assessed, treated and dressed quickly and appropriately.

Linda Hulmes, who works ate the centre, said: “This has been a real team effort and without the hard work of everybody here we wouldn’t have been able to achieve it.

“We work very hard and always make the care of our patients our number one priority so being recognised for that is rewarding for us.

“We hope we can go on another ten years now and maintain the high level of care we’re able to provide.

The Rakehead Rehabilitation Centre, which sees around 60 patients per year, offers neuro-rehabilitation to patients with complex disorders of then nervous system.

Chris Pearson, chief nurse at the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for everybody that’s been involved, I’m delighted at the level of care that has been delivered.

“I know the team will be able to keep on delivering the best care possible and continue to source of pride and inspiration for others in the Trust.”
