Parents mourn loss of ‘wonderful son’ killed in Salterforth hit and run

THE parents of the Barnoldswick cyclist tragically killed in an alleged hit-and-run accident yesterday morning have paid tribute to their “wonderful son”.

The parents of canal boat master Michael Isherwood, Ken and Ivy Isherwood, speaking on behalf of his family, said: “Michael was a wonderful son, brother and friend. He was kind, thoughtful and generous with his time, always ready to do anything for anyone. He worked hard and took real pride in his job, which he loved.

“Michael loved life and was enthusiastic about so many things. He loved being outdoors and was a gifted runner and cyclist. He could turn his hand to any DIY job and was enjoying doing up his house.

“Above all, he loved spending time relaxing with his friends and family. He always had so much energy and it was a joy to be around him.

“Michael was well loved by everyone who knew him and so many people will be devastated by his loss. We are lucky to have so many wonderful memories of him – his life was short, but he lived every minute of it to the full.”

The 36-year-old died following the road accident in Kelbrook Road, Salterforth, around 10-30 a.m. despite being airlifted to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment.

A 46-year-old man from Hyde, Cheshire, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is being questioned by officers at Burnley Police Station.

Det. Insp. Mark Rothwell said: “I would appeal for anyone who may have been in the area around 10-30 a.m. to come forward and contact police if they have any information.” Anyone with information should contact police on 08451 25 35 45 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A former West Craven High student, Mr Isherwood worked for Foulridge Canal Cruises, where he was responsible for steering and maintaining the boats. His manager, Mr Martin Cleaver, said he had lost “a good friend”.

He said the pair had worked together at Harry Garlick TV Services where Mr Isherwood was a trained electrician, until Mr Cleaver set up his canal business. Mr Isherwood worked casually for him on the boats before joining him on a permanent basis six years ago and gaining his boat master qualifications.

He was trusted with steering royal passenger Prince Charles on a canal boat tour during a visit to the area in 2008.

Mr Isherwood had spent the weekend at a caravan rally at Greenhills Camping and Caravan Park, Salterforth, with his parents and family friends. He was cycling from the site to work on the canal when he was hit by a car.

Mr Cleaver said: “Michael was into riding outdoors, motorbikes and mountain bikes. He was very fit and active. He did the Great North Run and finished in under 90 minutes and placed quite highly out of all the runners.

“His death affects us all. Michael was very helpful, he would help anybody and was very well liked.”
