Padiham was on amber flood alert tonight as torrential rain and gale force winds battered the town.

Worried residents and business owners were out sandbagging properties as the River Calder levels rose to high levels of 1.46m.

The Environment Agency warning was issued as flooding is possible at levels over 1.50m.

The community rallied into action, collecting sandbags and checking on neighbours as the Calder raged to high levels particularly behind the fire station and Shakespeare Street.

Parts of Read were also flooded along with Rossendale Road in Burnley,

The high winds caused mayhem in Sabden as fallen trees and lamp-posts blocked off roads.

A tree also went down in the car park at the Higher Trapp Hotel in Simonstone damaging several parked cars.

The rain was easing off this evening but weather forecasts predict more rainfall into the night.
