The owner of a brand new £50,000 fifth wheel trailer, stolen after it had to be unhitched near to Burnley during Storm Desmond, is urging anybody with any information on its whereabouts to come forward.
Mel Nolan was having the trailer moved from storage in Colne to Darwen by a family friend on Saturday, December 5th.
However, high winds and heavy rain meant it had to be abandoned on a lay-by in Shuttleworth Hall link road (A6068). The friend returned at 10am the next day to discover the 25ft. trailer had vanished.
Mel, who moved to Australia in 1967, had the Montana 318RE trailer imported from America in September and was planning to travel around the UK and Europe in it with his wife.
“We had some issues over here so we had actually decided to cut our losses and sell it,” said Mel, who still has a lot of friends in the area. “My friend had arranged the transportation and it was actually on its way to a more secure site where it could be photographed and appraised. The winds got so high though while they were moving it they were worried it was going to tip over. They decided to pull over into the next available lay-by and leave it there. That was in the middle of the afternoon. When they returned the next morning it had gone.”
Mel’s friend drove straight to Burnley Police Station in hope the trailer had been towed by they had no knowledge of it. He then drove around a number of sites it may have been taken to but again to no avail.
Mel said: “The trailer is uninsured. We have reported it to Burnley police but so far we have heard nothing. “We can’t understand how it has just vanished into thin air. Whoever has taken it would have had to have had a special type of hitch in order to move it. I can’t believe that somebody hasn’t seen something.”
Anybody with any information can contact Burnley police on 101, quoting log number LC-20151206-0717 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. The chassis number of the trailer is 4YDF31824EA740310.
