Overnight snowfall brings treacherous conditions to Burnley roads and a number of school closures

Overnight snowfall brought chaos to roads across Burnley this morning with several accidents reported.

Although gritters have been working through the night to keep primary routes clear, many side roads remain untreated.

Police have been dealing with a number of collisions in the area particularly in higher areas of the town, including Brunshaw Road and the Briercliffe area where the junction of Halifax Road with Walverden Road is blocked.

A spokesman for Burnley Police renewed the appeal for essential journeys only and warned that anyone on the road who comes to their attention would be asked to justify their trip.

The spokesman said: "In any event, please exercise caution as driving conditions are hazardous across the east of the county, particularly over high ground.

Snow and icy condtiions has also seen a number of school closures. In Burnley Holly Grove School and Reedley Hallows nursery are closed.

The doors of Higham St John's Primary School and Hapton C of E Pirmary also remain closed today.
